Back in the 70's, the only Wellesley internships available were on Capitol Hill and seemed to be awarded mainly to Political Science students. With no family political connections, I wrote a letter to my congressman and included my resume. Next thing I knew, the Congressman's Administrator called me, interviewed me for about 15 minutes over the phone, and offered me a job. Once I started, I learned he felt the most impressive person who ever had worked in that office was a Wellesley graduate and that is why he hired me.
My summer internship on Capitol Hill was solely due to a Wellesley graduate I never met.
