As a woman and a scientist I was the only woman on project teams during the first decade of my career. It would have been easy to rely on others to present my work, not answer questions and sit quietly in the corner as requested. My experience at Wellesley ensured that I didn't consider that for a minute! I took my place at the table from my early 20's onwards and have never let go of that seat. In the process, I have convinced decision-makers to expand their thinking based on data and statistical models which led to new approaches and saving lives. From changes in protective clothing design for young soldiers to treatment models that keep frail elderly safely at home, I know that I have played a key role that would not have been possible without the Wellesey Effect.
Confidence in myself as a scientist, taking my seat at the table and saving lives
